OCTOBER 14.
Symposium on "The 'Other' Others: Jews and Arabs in Latin America," hosted by  The Tam Institute for Jewish Studies and The Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry. 9 AM to 5 PM, Jones Room, Woodruff Library. Introductory remarks by professors Jeffrey Lesser, Ranaan Rein,and Leo Spitzer  and concluding remarks by professor Mariano Plotkin.

OCTOBER 19. LACS faculty seminar. Professor Dierdra Reber (Department of Spanish & Portuguese): “Independent Latin America as Neocolony: Toward a Tricontinental Postcolonialism.” 11:30, White Hall 200.

OCTOBER 21-24. Latin American film festival sponsored by the graduate students of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. Films, times, and locations TBA.

OCTOBER 28. Lecture by professor Edward Wright-Ríos (Vanderbilt University): "Moving the Faithful: Laywomen, Local  Devotion and Religious Leadership in Oaxaca." Time and place TBA.

NOVEMBER 10. Lecture by professor Lewis Taylor (Director Latin American Studies, University of Liverpool): “Political Violence and Democracy in the Andes.” Time and Place TBA.

NOVEMBER 13. A music and film program celebrating Heitor Villalobos’s life and works. Tentatively scheduled for 7 PM in White Hall 208.

NOVEMBER 16. Lecture by professor Kirsten Silva Gruesz (UC-Santa Cruz): “Cotton Mather’s Spanish Lessons.”  Time and place TBA.
